Some of us have not changed our rooms in 5 years or more. Some of us don't know where to start. Some of us just need to be eased into adding a little pizzazz to our rooms. Here are 4 ways to make it easier:

1) Plan your furniture and its uses.
It's always a good idea to have a space for collaboration, a space for independent work, and a space for individuals to be alone if they want it. If you teach primary grades, you'll want a space for large group teaching and meeting. There are online resources to help you with furniture placement, such as planyourroom.com, or floorplanner.com. Of course, you can always use the "paper-and-post-its" approach. Write the name of the furniture or other items on post its and arrange it on a piece of paper, which represents your room. Then you'll be ready to move them into place.

2)Plan your colors.
Choose 3 colors to use as the focal point of your room. Your borders, bulletin board paper, and accessories will use these 3 colors. You can vary the tints and shades of these colors with lighter/darker versions in order to add depth. If you're on a budget, go in search of what you already have, or what the school has on hand. If you don't want to change your colors from year to year, you may want to choose black or gray as one of the colors. It's neutral enough that you can change out one or 2 of the other colors for a cheap way to achieve a new look.

3)Use more than 1 border.
If you add 2 (or more) borders to a bulletin board, it adds huge dimension and interest. It might take a little more time, but it's so worth it. I tape the 2 borders together before I hang them sometimes. It saves a little on time. If you put up manufactured posters (only because you use them to teach!), put a border around it. It will add weight to the poster and give it a frame.

4)Add some comfort.
Even if it's just one comfortable chair, put it in a corner with a small end table, a pillow and a blanket. Yes, you will have to tell kids the pillow is not for heads. In my room, pillows are for arms, elbows and bottoms. But yes, you will have to take them home to wash it. Or have a parent volunteer. You'd be surprised at the difference a pillow and a blanket can make.

Remember to leave some blank spaces for kids work. My bulletin boards are solely for curriculum use. We post anchor charts, standards, vocabulary, essential questions, etc. I post kids work around the room in other spots.

Adding a little character and warmth to your room doesn't have to be difficult or expensive. It just takes a little planning and time. And if your short on both, use your students! They would love to help you. What better way to work together than to create a space in which you all have ownership!
But that might be a myth. Are there teachers who don't think environment is important? I would guess there are. But why? It's not valuable? It detracts from the kids attention or engagement? It's rudimentary for their grade level? I say 1-that's not true, 2-only if you let it, and 3- it is even more important, the older the students get.

I think you can debunk the myth that classroom "decorations" are not important in 3 ways.

1-Kids notice, which gives it immeasurable value.

I hear comments that kids make when they walk past my room. "Cool!" "Did you see that?" It gets their attention. They see it, and it makes an impression. Isn't that our goal? Isn't that why we got into teaching- to make a positive impression on kids and the future? "Decorating" does it. And whether or not they consciously make the connection between time spent creating an environment, and your love for them, that connection is still there. One of the greatest compliments I ever got on my classroom environment was when my niece Olivia showed an Instagram post of my classroom to her friend. Olivia is 14. My classroom made enough of an impression on a 14 year old, that she showed it to another 14 year old. And her friend's response was "That's her classroom? How come our classrooms never looked like that?" It made an impression- they noticed. And yes, it is one way I show my love for them, and for learning.

2-It creates a feeling of welcome and engagement.
You can add decoration without busyness. Often, busyness in classroom decoration comes from adding random items without thought. That's the opposite of creating environment. It's hanging unused, manufacturer's posters, using too much and varied color schemes, patterns that clash, etc. It can become overwhelming. When you start with a plan for color, use cohesive materials, are inspired by a place or things you love, it becomes an environment that gives others a feeling of warmth and caring when they enter it. It's welcoming, or exciting, or fun. We all want to be places that are welcoming, fun, relaxing or exciting. And when kids enter your classroom, feel those positive emotions, and experience that sense of caring, they will want to be there. It's your first step in building relationships with them. If you feel that environment will be distracting, give them time to absorb it. Explore the room with them. Show them the details you have added and how they will use them. Let them touch stuff if they need to. That distraction will dissipate, and what will remain is the feeling of care you have shown to them.

3-It's for all ages and subjects.
Going back to my story of Olivia and her friend from #1- I'll say it again. They're 14. Do you know what 14 year olds are like at home? They don't like their parents too much, and often show their irritation with all things familial. Their main hang out is their bedroom. With the door shut. Their phone is never more than 6 inches from their bodies at all times, including when they're in the bathroom. So when a 14 year old shows their friends something ON THEIR HOLY GRAIL OF A PHONE, it's a big deal. And when said 14 year old friend responds with "Our classrooms never looked like that." it tells me that is is still important, even though she is starting high school. The theme of a classroom will change, or the color, or the scope of the environment. But the time put into the preparation, the love you are showing the students, the sensations you are creating are still important to those children of all ages that we are serving. As they get older, I believe it becomes harder to retain the sense of love, excitement and joy in learning. That's when environment and those first impressions become even more important. It's one more hook to draw them in so you can do your job: changing the world through the children you touch.

Now, to all of you non-decorators: I get it. Creativity is hard work, and it might not be work that interests you. That's the reality of it, and honestly, it's what makes the world go 'round. But that doesn't excuse you. You just need to get help. I am not interested in learning how to fix my car. I take it to a mechanic because getting around town IS important to me. I hate science class. It's fascinating to me as a part of God's creation, but I don't want to learn it or talk about it. So I get help because I have to use it and teach it. I research, I ask questions, I read. It's the same thing with classroom environment. You're not excused from it. It's still out there, like this big dead end, to borrow from the always great "When Harry Met Sally". So get help. Ask a decorating teacher- you know some. Read, research, ask questions. Decorating teachers LOVE to help you, in the same way that science teachers LOVE to talk science. Let them.

If I have convinced you that classroom "decoration" is important, come back again later this week. I'll give you a few easy ways that you can actually implement to make it happen.
I've been thinking alot about what I want to do with my classroom this coming fall. It's time to decide once and for all. I love all the bright colors of fun bulletin boards with their pompoms and tissue paper flowers. In fact, I helped create some for a friend last week.

But I really want to feel at home in my classroom this year. I want to walk in and feel like I'm in a home, not a classroom. I'm afraid I'm going to miss the bright and fun of the colors and the pompoms, but this year I'm changing things up. I'm really going to try to use decor items that I would use in my home. Some of what I would like to do, I know I can't. Frames around bulletin board instead of borders. Warmer paint color. Wallpaper. So instead, I'm using what I can. I have only just begun, but here's a start:

I spray painted my plastic tubs silver. I love the way they turned out. These were lime green dollar store plastic. I also covered them in a spray topcoat, to try to minimize the inevitable chipping. I love lime green, and it hurt me a little to cover up all that bright fun, but do they make me feel at home? Do I have lime green plastic tubs in my living room? No. That's my goal. Not eliminate fun colors, just be more intentional about feeling at home.

Here's my next step: recreating my reclaimed wood wall in the form of bulletin boards.

I found this here on Amazon. And I'm not sure if it's because I have Amazon Prime, but it was free shipping! So I've been dreaming of wood bulletin boards for the last 2 days. Seriously. DREAMING of it. In my actual dreams. Trying to think of what to use as a "frame". I would use pieces of fence post actual wood, but it's too much wood. The one in my house doesn't have a frame around it. So what to do to frame it in...a white fence post frame??? Hmmm...there's a thought. That sounds like a ton of work, though, if you ask me. And at this point, I don't think I have it in me. So a paper border it is. But I'm keeping it simple: white (flip over one of my 5,000 already purchased borders) and gray. But I still need some color on my bulletin boards, so I'll be thinking that over.

One more hurdle: reduce, reuse, recycle. I'm trying not to buy 12 rolls of new border, "new" Goodwill furniture, more bins, baskets, organizers, name plates, whatever. Some purchases are inevitable. But I'm trying to use WHAT I ALREADY HAVE! It's tough. And even though I haven't made big purchases at the teacher's store, and honestly, I probably won't, my friends in the spray paint aisle at Home Depot are getting to know me very well.
Look more like a living room. Or a family room. Or even an office. Just a warmer, more homey feel.I LOVE to be at home. So do my kids. Probably because we are NEVER there. (I also think that's why it's so messy.) But even with the laundry basket on the floor, and the carpet that needs vacuuming, the half-empty Wendy's cups on the counter, and the 5 pairs of shoes next to the couch, we all want to be here. Maybe because it's comfortable. Or because that's where WE all are, even though we don't love each other every second of the day. But I also hear my students say from time to time "I wish I were at home." You can't blame 'em, can you?
That's what I want to capture at my school. That feeling of home. Next year I'm changing schools. Again. I'm thinking a lot about it, too. How do I want my new home to feel? Just like that- like a home. So I'm trying to look differently at pictures I see and articles I read about home decor. I'm thinking about how I can apply those things to my school. And I'm thinking more in terms of "my school" than "my classroom". When we think of our home, we think of it as the collection of rooms, not just one. Our family is a unit, not one person. Our school is more than just our classroom, it's the entire place, from the office to the janitor's closet.
That's MUCH more homey than my plastic tray sitting on the counter looking messy!

But to begin, I will start in my classroom. And I'm using a new eye. One that is full of a love for all things HOME.
I'm pretty sure in a former post I mentioned that I'm teaching 3rd grade this year. So that meant many things, one of which was: I needed new morning work!

One of my goals for spring break was to make my morning work for 4th quarter. And yes, it's the Saturday before school starts again, but I did it!! Whew! Time for a nap.

I like to use higher level thinking with morning work, just to give them some practice and make morning work a little more engaging. Each day has a theme, but the pages change three times within that theme. So for instance, Monday is Math Monday. Three weeks are spent practicing counting money, three weeks practicing time, and three weeks for fact family practice. On Mondays, we use it like a scoot game, or scavenger hunt, where the kids find a numbered envelope with a problem in it.

Disclaimer: there is a teeny tiny bit of prep work involved, but I tried to keep even that as simple as possible. You also need to have a few items on hand, but they're very common, and you may not even have to buy them. Or if you do, they're cheap! And it's only for a few days. Most days are just print and go. But I want to let people know that. I kept the price low ($3.50) for the whole quarter's worth of work.

Tuesday is "Touch it Tuesday", which speaks to the early childhood teacher in me. There are three Tuesdays of using chopsticks to pick up objects (or letters) and then write about them, three days of writing about goop they will make, and three days of writing spelling words in different kinds of substances (like canned pumpkin or shaving cream).

Here are some of the inspiration pieces for my next classroom décor pack. I've recently become a fan of navy. It's such a classic color, but I never really liked it. Isn't that a Jerry Seinfeld joke about navy? "What's the deal with navy? It's not black, it's not blue. It makes me uncomfortable." Can't you hear Jerry Seinfeld saying that?

Navy is for sure a classic color. If colors had ages, it would be 2,000. But paired with newer, hipper colors, like teal, turquoise, gray and coral, (of course gray is an old color, too, but it's like Han Solo- it's totally cool and will never age) it takes on a whole new look. It seems to ground the rest of the colors. It brings maturity to the young pups.

So I've just STARTED working on my next year's design. It's barely even a passing thought, but I wanted to at least get something down on paper. On computer. You can get the first page of labels/word wall/name tags/calendar pieces/whatever you want them for at Teachers Pay Teachers. It's free and editable. You'll see there is no coral in it yet-that will come later. I used four different shades of blue because I think different tints of a color bring depth to a room. There is also texture in the color. Go check it out and let me know what you think.

Have a great FRIDAY!!!
I just read about an interesting guy named David Thornburg. He seems to live in Brazil and the United States, from what I can tell. He is a future-thinker and has some cool ideas. I like the way he thinks about new classroom spaces helping students to learn, and more importantly, to "think". He has developed some easy to implement ideas in classroom design. He encourages classrooms to have these parts (as soon as you see them, you'll understand what he means):

Watering hole
Cave
Campfire
Mountain Top
Sandpit

Here's what he means:
Watering hole: a place to come together to exchange ideas
Campfire: here is where we share stories, exchange ideas and allow the group to build on each others’ ideas.
Cave: a place to withdraw from the noise of the classroom to be alone with your thoughts and reflection. A place to explore questions and make connection
Mountain Top: where we celebrate and share learning ‘one to many’. You ‘sing it from the mountaintop’.
Sandpit: here you play, prototype, and experiment without worrying about mess, water or damaging surface

This analogy appealed to me because it's true in our personal lives, and should also be true in the classroom. We can achieve these places in our classrooms using what we already have. We don't need new and expensive furniture. We just need to put ourselves in the mind of our students. What spaces do they need each day? Can they go to a corner and cool off? Can they engage with each other to share learning?

As I read more about classroom design, some of the ideas out there seem to me to be exactly that. "Out there." Maybe not bad, maybe even great, but also not exactly realistic. I try to remember these 3 key ingredients:

all things in moderation
balance, and
some is better than none.

That's why David's idea of the cave and the campfire appeal to me. It's easy for me to process, understand why it's desirable, and then implement. I can use what I already have.

This is a very student-directed classroom. I love that table next to the loveseat. It looks really homey. But could you pull this off in your school? I think my principal would listen to me if I wanted to implement this. I think I'd have some explaining to do, though, as to the why it's necessary to completely get rid of my desks. But for this teacher, great!

Her name is Elise Legaspi and she's from California. I think her room is very comfortable, and she has some great furniture! You can clearly see she's a student-directed teacher who wants students to be engaged. And that's what classroom design is all about! Engaging students and transforming not only the classroom, but the students!

Transforming your classroom will transform your teaching!

..

Check out this innovative school in Florida. What do you think?

I would love to try it for awhile and see how it works. Or at least visit and learn from them. Would I be able to fit into that model? How do the kids learn and get along? What are test results? Do they test? Are there any traditional aspects? How does it work in the day to day?

I think it's really interesting, in regards to classroom design, and learning!

I was in a serious budget crunch at Christmas time. We had some MAJOR car bills (we're talking multiple thousands) come up right before Christmas which ate into our Christmas fund. So I was on the hunt for BARGAINS. And when I say bargains, I mean...what can I make for next to nothing?

So here was one solution...a Christmas decoration for my sister. I think it turned out really cute. In these pictures, it still needs an "M" (for Meyer) as the tree trunk. I decided not to put a star on the top, but you could if you wanted. I couldn't find any that weren't cheesy.

I made this out of fence post wood slats. About $2.50 from Home Depot for a 5 or 6 foot post. I already had the three pieces as left-overs from a fireplace project, but you only need one board, cut into 12 inch strips. Here are the steps I took:

1-cut the angled edges off (and cut into 12 in. pieces if you need to)
2-stain

3-cover with painters tape to make the chevron
4-stain again with the tape on, to make the pattern
5-screw on a piece of bracket on the back to keep the pieces together

6-glue on the ornaments
7-screw in eyelets on top and insert wire

8-add twine bows or accents to the eyelets if you want

Now, I had most of these items at home, so I only had to buy the ornaments for $3 at Michaels. But if you had to buy everything, it would still cost you less than about $15.

I want to make another one, but with the next one, I plan to make the pieces longer, and add an arrow with the word "Permberly". There are a TON of ideas you could use. A heart for Valentines, Eggs for Easter, a simple initial, a plain arrow, an ampersand, (what is it about ampersands that are so cool?) vinyl letters, you name it.

Do you know Linda Kamp? She is awesome. I love her products and her blog posts. Helpful, to the point, engaging. I read her latest, and it taught me a new Pinterest tip. Organize the school year pins by month! You can't do that for all of your teaching pins, but it's great for those that work! I think it will really make planning my year easier.

Also, being Jan. 2nd, with school a mere 2 days away, it's time to start planning. I'll be honest, I HATE writing lesson plans. Mine are pretty involved, and that's important to me but I need to find a way to enjoy writing them and find passion in my planning! I'm not sure that's possible, but today I came across Linda's January Pinterest board, and a new way to use Planbook.com that I think might help. I've written before about Planbook.com, but my new way to use it: Planning units! It allows me to create units in any class, date them, add lessons, assessments, objectives, standards, and more.

I just finished Social Studies for the rest of the year. Now I'll just need to add to each individual unit as I go. For example, I purchased 2 MLK projects at TPT, and I added them to the unit. And at Planbook.com, I can upload the unit right to my lesson plan page. So I can plan my unit, go to my weekly lesson plan, attach the items I purchased, along with the unit plan I created, and boom! My week is done. And saved for the next year to tweak as I go. I can also add a link to my monthly Pinterest board (or any Pinterest board) and anything pinned is right there, ready to use!

If you need planning to be a little easier, or you need to do some long term planning, Planbook.com is the way to go.

Two more weeks 'til break!!!! I'm ready already and that is so sad because I just had a full week off for PD over Thanksgiving week! I shouldn't need another break this early. Why is it that I hate planning so much?! I love finding fun stuff to do! I just wish it didn't take so long, or so much brain energy. Or that I had enough money to buy all my stuff on TPT and just use the cute and fun plans I see on the website.
I'm sure I've shared with you all the fact that I love classroom decorating and organizing that. I've been doing a ton of research on it lately as well. I have so much interesting information to share with you as far as how classroom décor affects learning and test results.

But I'm such a bad blogger! I just have a super hard time getting anything written! And when I do, I write like an 8 year old! It's like I've lost all writing ability. I wonder if it's because it's 10:30 PM by the time I sit down to it...hmm...

Anyway, I started recording the cool stuff I'm learning and seeing over at Facebook, of all places. I may or may not have shared with you my feelings about Facebook. I'll spare you a trip to my soapbox, but I do see its' strengths, and communicating with other teachers is one of them.

Soooooo.....(Are you a KidHistory fan????!!!! If not, check them out! Hilarious.) if you follow my Facebook page, I'll treat you to any product from my TPT store for free. Just message me your email address at Facebook after hitting my Like button. Or come on back here and give me your address in the comment section.

I must not be efficient with my time.

I am not a teacher who gets their lesson plans done by Thursday for the upcoming week. Too much other stuff comes up! I have a 40 minute free period each day. So in theory, that is my time to plan a subject for the next week. But that time seems to get eaten up with:
*answering emails
*using the bathroom!
*running to the office (on the opposite side of a decent-sized campus)
*making copies
*correcting and entering grades
*prepping for the next class
*updating my classroom website
*writing my newsletter
and after school it's the same thing.

So my lesson plans have to wait. By the time I get home at 5:30, cook/clean up dinner, do family stuff, and then sit down to do some work, I am wiped out! I can hardly form a cohesive thought. So here I am, writing lesson plans on Sunday afternoon once again. Along with planning meals for the week and shopping for those meals. Sunday becomes a day that I dread instead of a day relaxing, enjoying my family, and finding some peaceful time to rejuvenate.

Life is SO BUSY!!!! I think it's time to move off to a remote island with some of those people on HGTV who are buying houses after selling all they own. Sigh. Maybe someday.

So here is what I'm excited about. Planbook.com. My new school requires that teachers use it. It's a web-based lesson planner. They use it so that the Principal has easy access to all the teacher's lesson plans. At least that's one reason. I'm sure it's not the only one.

When I first started using it, I was writing my lesson plans on excel, after a never-ending search for an organized and efficient way to write thorough lesson plans. So I kept doing that, because I was getting used to it. I could still use Planbook, I would just attach the spreadsheet to my lesson plan template. But as I was working on my plans yesterday, I thought to myself, "When I use excel, I have to re-create the labels at the top of the spreadsheet for each week. This is not efficient, either. I'm getting sick of having to do this." Then I remembered the fabulous first grade teacher at school on Friday asking how I liked using Planbook, and telling me how much she loved it. So I thought: I wonder if I could do this easier on the website? Sure enough!! I played around and watched a tutorial, and you can do great things here!

You can save plans from day to day and from week to week, just drag them down to the next day/week. You can set up templates to use for ease of writing, such as: objective, page, chapter, essential question, etc. You can color code your subjects. They are saved from year to year so you can re-use them with just a tweak or two! Once you set up your subjects, days off, and times, you're set for the year. So I never have to re-enter anything I don't want to re-write. I think we pay either $12 or $19 (I can't remember) per year to use it. But it's worth it! Now if I have to change schools, I can take it with me. It's still mine to use, and I don't have to worry about saving things on my portable hard drive, and I can do lesson plans wherever I am! You can also insert links and attach files, so that cute worksheet you made goes right into your plan, you just open and print it right from your planbook.

Check it out! It might save you some of your PRICELESS time. Here's the link one more time. By the way, I am not getting any type of reimbursement. This company barely knows I exist. (: And that's fine with me. (:
Ok, so here are some details that kicked my bulletin boards up a notch:
1. the ever popular tissue pom
2. multiple borders
3. multiple patterns (but within a common theme and color)
4. bows
5. streamers
6. border "extras"
7. Paisleys and dragonfly cut-outs

So there's a little preview. I sometimes miss having a theme. But it's a very calming room. The blue is actually a teal color, not quite as blu-ish. On the first day one of my students told me it looked like a hotel! I'm not sure if he meant it as a compliment, but I'll take it!

I always make all my own decorations. I had to completely change my plan this year because I didn't have access to colored ink, and couldn't afford to make a bunch of colored prints at Staples. So I did the best I could with black and white. I figured it was cheaper that way, and I could always just use the copier for some things.

I always say decorating is in the details. More details to come at a later time. Thank you for looking!
I'm teaching 3rd grade this year after 5 years in 1st. I was a little apprehensive, even though I was ready for a change.

So far I love it! The kids can do so much more. They're so much more independent. But they're still funny and love the little things. One little sweetie guy cried because he hurt someone's feeelings and he was afraid she would tell her mom!!!! Maybe not the best motivation for crying, but still...it's that uninhibited raw emotion and feeling of the little ones that is so endearing.

But I feel like a first year teacher again! I'm starting over in so many ways on so many levels.

So...homework. Which side are you on? Do you send home a weekly packet? Is it whatever they don't finish during the day? Do you subscribe to the less is more, or the more lends to higher achievement? I know that research shows that homework aids in education. Disproportionately, too. For example, 350 minutes of instruction + 50 minutes of homework per day is > than 400 minutes. It's a little like the way lifting weights helps burn fat beyond the time that you actually spend on the weight machines.

I say "all things in moderation". 3rd graders are still in the early childhood spectrum. They need to relax, unwind, decompress, read and PLAY after school. We live in a world of worry, panic, fear and anxiety. Why push them into that world ahead of their time? Maybe their homework should be relaxation techniques! That would certainly be authentic for their adult years!

In trying to find the homework balance, I want them to learn their math facts without just using flash cards or writing on fluency worksheets. So I am creating weekly math menus that give them options for fluency practice. Each day they have a different way to play. In this first menu, the students will need a hundreds chart, highlighter, page protector and fluency practice sheet. I get my practice sheets for free from mathdrills.com. It's a user-friendly and free website that lets you print from a myriad of math fact templates.

I'm sharing this menu for free in my store. Grab it here and see if it works for you. My hope is that it gives the kids a fun way to practice those facts that they need at their fingertips.
Has your summer ever been...less than what you thought it would be? It starts on such a high. Sleeping in! No lunches to make! Reading the Sunday paper! Home projects!

Then about 3-4 weeks in, you start to fade a little. Still fun. Maybe a vacation to look forward to. A pool if you're in the south like me. Still lovin' all the summer stuff. But feeling a little discombobulated due to a lack of schedule/calendar.

Then a couple more weeks and you start to feel a little panicky. School is coming. The lack of schedule is really starting to get to you, but the whirlwind that is the school year is creeping up. Time is no longer on your side.

Those have been my phases of summer for the last couple years. This year, not so much. I started the first 2 weeks of summer with some health issues that kept me on my bed or the couch. They were resolved. So I started planning for a new jump from first grade to third. And then about 2 days later I lost my job- money and enrollment issues. So the next 4 weeks were filled with resumes, applications and interviews. Questionnaires and phone calls. What a long process job hunting can be. It's exhausting. Scary and stressful times for our family of 6.

I have been blessed with a new job after being able to choose from a few. That is a GIFT. I have chosen a jump to 3rd once again. And now, 2 weeks out from the first day of school, I find myself in a hotel 2,000 miles from home. Visiting Indiana for a family wedding.

I can truly say this was a summer like no other. Not always fancy-free and full of sunshine and sleeping in. But I learned SO much. And I am grateful that I lost my job. Sometimes God takes us by the hand and pulls us into new situations. Growth isn't painless, and steel is strengthened through fire. But God brought me closer to Him and a better understanding of some of life's struggles.

Now, on to find some good 3rd grade blogs!
I started working on next year's Candy Shoppe Decoration set about 2 years ago. Then school started that year and I never got back to it. Now, finally, I am. In my last post I told you that I'm moving to 3rd grade. I'm still using this set, even though it might seem a little young. It's so bright and colorful and happy, I think the kids will love it. It's full of patterns, and bold, bright colors. I'm making it with and without candy graphics so it can be used even if your not a theme-girl.

So while I finish it up, you can grab one of the alphabets here for free. With and without the candy graphics! Grab it now, because once I add the whole set of decorations, it won't be free anymore!

I hope you like it!
I am so sorry I did not post any Easter freebies. My computer was DEAD. Totally out of commission.

I am CHANGING GRADES next year!! Ahhhh!!!!! I've been in first grade this time around for 5 years. This is the longest I've been in one grade, and I'm sad to say I'm leaving it. I really like the first graders. They're so funny and loving. They get excited over small things. I know the curriculum. (Finally.) I have a grasp on standards. (Mostly.) And now I'm starting over.

But...
I'm moving to 3rd grade, which I have taught before. And when I did, I loved it. Really, really loved it. And double bonus, my room has a bathroom in it! And triple bonus, my new room is right next to the teacher's workroom!

I'm excited to plan. I'm excited to move classrooms. Yes, you read that right. I actually am excited to go through my <strike>crap</strike> learning tools and purge. And of course I'm excited to decorate. I'm working on my theme for next year. Sweet Shoppe! No, 3rd grade is not too old to have a themed classroom decorating scheme. Who doesn't like candy??!! And since I had these guys last year as first graders, I know they like candy!!! I've been working on it for a couple years and had to put it on hold. So it's back on the burner, simmering as I add details and graphics. I can't wait to get it done and take some pictures! I have big plans!!!!

I think I am WAY behind in math. We're reviewing adding 3 digits and adding multiples of 10. Many of you are adding/subtracting double digits with regrouping! Yikes! I better pick up the pace. I also feel like they don't really have a solid grasp of number sense. Do they really know what they're doing when they add and subtract. I'm just not convinced.

So next week, we'll be all about the number sense, adding and subtracting multiples of 10, all with an Easter theme. I'll keep you posted and send out some freebies.
What do you know about Experiential Learning? Did you see those capital letters? I think it's a capital letter kind-of thing. To me, it's a teaching/learning model or method. Hands-on. Using authentic assessments. PBL. STEM project inclusion. Research-based. Using movement, music and arts. Limited worksheets. (I can't help thinking that a worksheet here and there is not all bad. But LIMITED.) Real-world. Tailored.

These are some schools I have researched that come to mind:

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Tessaract School- Scottsdale AZ
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Explorer Charter School- San Diego CA
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Tuscon Waldorf School- Tuscon AZ
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The Graham School- Columbus OH
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Ron Clark Academy<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> -?? Not sure if I would call that Experiential or not

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">What do you think about these schools? This kind of learning environment? It seems so engaging. Check out <span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">this video<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> of a community/city/building project from The Explorer Charter School first grade. It's awesome! It's exactly what I would like to do. That is the teacher I want to be. How engaged are those kids? How fun would that be?
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I know it takes planning. I know public schools can't do it, most of the time. I think you have to find your way, find your fit, find what kind of teacher you are, what methods you ascribe to, and go from there. I'm still finding those things! But looking at schools like these and teachers like theirs are helping and inspiring me!

If you know anything about experiential learning, please share!
I could be a Professional Workshop Attender and spend the rest of my life living the dream. I had the opportunity to see Dr. Rich Allen last week here in Phoenix. He's a research-based teaching advocate. He was super funny and it was full of great ideas. He's all about movement and music in the classroom. Much like Rick Morris.

*have the kids stand in different sides of the room to give an answer (be it yes or no, opinion, or even multiple choice- it may take longer, but record whether or not they went to the right area, and walla! No papers to correct!

*instead of worksheets, have kids write answers on a markerboard and put it on top of their heads. It's fun for them, and easy for you to see, plus no one can look at each others answers. Again, record answers for an easy grade.
*cut up a worksheet and put it into plastic Easter eggs. The kids go on an egg hunt and record their answers.
*make a hopscotch on the ground full of letters. Hop out the spelling words. Or vocab.

I bought his book (Half.com, of course- $2.99 vs. the $25 at the conference) and am just starting it now.

But I'm also reading this:

I know I probably shouldn't admit that. If I love teaching so much, and have such great, innovative and creative ideas that I can blog about them, why would I need to read a book called "48 Days to the Work You Love"?

Do you ever wonder if you should really be a teacher? Well, sometimes I do. If you read this blog, you might wonder the same thing about me. Ha. Don't get me wrong, I love the kids and truly do enjoy teaching. But with 4 kids of my own, and a husband and a house, it gets overwhelming. This book is SO good. It's not about finding a new job. It's about how your job/career/vocation is only a small part of your life. It's about finding a new job if that's what you need. But there's so much more to it than that. I highly recommend it.

Spring Break starts tomorrow!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And then for me, its 47 Days to the Summer I Love! Thanks for reading!

I mean, Ron Clark Academy

Have you seen all the blog posts that are talking about their trip to RCA? I think it looks awesome. And at this point in my life, expensive. It would take me about a year to save up the money I would need for a trip like that.

My husband and Daughter at the Daddy Daughter Dance

And I think it's my husband who should really go. My husband is my principal, for those of you who don't know. He sacrifices being able to go to conferences the rest of us go to because he is either teaching, or working in the office, or at home with our own children. But with all the changes coming to our school, I think it's the perfect time and place to go visit. So I asked our Board of Ed for help paying for a trip for him. And they're considering it!!!! I'm so excited. It's not a done deal, but just the fact that they're thinking about it is exciting to me!

Even if he can go, it won't be me going. But I don't even care (although I wish I could go with him) that it's him and not me. At least I can hear about it first hand. And it's payback time for me. He is a huge help to me, and lets me go to the annual conference with all our teachers in Palm Springs, CA. A beautiful place. Especially in November. It's a special time to see fellow teachers and relax without kids or stress. So now it's his turn.

I feel a little like I'm wanting to do what all the cool kids are doing. But what a place RCA seems to be! It's hard not to be curious! So in the mean time, I'm reading this:

So far, so good. An easy read, and good for me to read at this point in my year. And only $.75 at Half.com!!!

"Enjoy" your Sunday. Can a teacher really do that?
